Definitions of the words that appear most often in these guides.
Account
The workspace everything else belongs to. It carries the business details, the compliance information, the users and the numbers.
Account status
Whether an account is a draft, active, paused, inactive, suspended or in review. Pausing an account stops its queue.
Alias
A short unique identifier for the account, limited to lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens. Editable only while the account is a draft.
Automation Context
The exact incoming message text that triggers an automation.
Contact
One person you can message, identified by their phone number and carrying a name, language, subscription state, external id, email and note.
Conversation
Everything exchanged with one contact, in both directions.
Credits
Units converted by message type. The units used are multiplied by the credits that message type costs.
Custom field
One of three extra columns a contact import can map, alongside the named contact fields.
External ID
An identifier from your own system, stored on a contact so you can tie it back to the record it came from.
MMS
A text message with media attached. Media raises the unit allowance from 3 to 10.
Number
The phone number you send from and receive on. Numbers are owned by the account and are either active or removed.
Provider
The supplier a phone number comes from, shown in the Phone Numbers list.
Segment
One part of a text message. A long message is split into several segments.
Service
A single sending effort. A messaging service sends campaigns to contacts; a feed service publishes content.
SMS
A plain text message.
Template
The message text and any media for one kind of send. Templates belong to a service.
Unit
The smallest measure of sending: a segment for a text message, a minute for a call. Units are what credits and cost are calculated from.
Unsubscribe
A contact asking to stop receiving messages. Recorded on the contact, and honoured across every service.
Use case
A declaration of what the account will send. The use cases chosen decide which additional setup fields are required.
VIP number
A number a messaging service treats separately from the rest of its audience.
